PURSUING EXCELLENCE IN
CHORAL PERFORMANCE
The Gettysburg Choral Society, Inc. will present a Christmas concert entitled “Joy to the World!” on Saturday, December 9th, at 3:00 P.M. in the Basilica of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, 339 S. Seton Ave., Emmitsburg, Md. 21727.
The forty-voice chorus, under the direction of John McKay, will celebrate the basilica’s captivating acoustics with a number of a cappella arrangements by the legendary Robert Shaw and Alice Parker. The sonic properties of these classic Christmas selections are sure to impress, as are the other seasonal favorites being presented by the chorus.
The basilica organist, Mr. Joseph O’Brien, will provide accompaniment for certain choral selections and on the carol sing-along at the end of the concert.
As always, the concerts are free and open to the public. Tax-deductible contributions will be received to help defray expenses.
A native of Philadelphia, Joseph O’Brien serves as the Organist at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Maryland and the Director of Music at Holy Family Church in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia.
He began his studies on the piano with Kathleen Schneider and has had performance opportunities in the Philadelphia area and beyond. In the spring of 2014, he performed in recitals at the Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Concert Hall and Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, both located in the heart of New York City. Joseph studied organ with Michael Sheerin, and during this time was the recipient of the Peter LaManna Excellence in Music Scholarship. He continued studies in improvisation with Benjamin LaPrairie.
Joseph has given recent performances at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Madeleine Wing Adler Theater at West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Dwight Chapel at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and Christ Church in downtown Rochester, New York. He currently studies with Anita Greenlee pursuing his degree in Organ Performance at West Chester University.
